Live Wedding Painting

What is live wedding painting and how does it work?

You might have seen it on social media: videos of guests at a wedding, disbelieving and delighted as they walk by a canvas that the viewer can’t see yet. Then the painting is revealed at the end of the night: a beautiful, timeless piece of art capturing a moment the couple shared on the wedding day, whether that’s the first kiss, first dance, or walk down the aisle.

Live wedding painting is a unique and memorable experience that allows the guests to watch as a piece of art is created before their eyes in real time.

When booked, I have a consultation with the client where we discuss which moment they would like painted. Since I work in watercolor, I can’t really lay paint down before I know the exact composition/where I’ll be putting the figures, so depending on the moment the couple chooses, I’ll begin the drawing after I get a photo.

Then I work on the drawing and painting all throughout the night, making sure I’m in an optimal setting to allow guests to watch me work! As I do live portraits as well, I am used to answering questions and responding to comments about my work, and I love those little bits of guest interaction.

Most live painters work in an opaque paint like oils or acrylics- my decision to work in a translucent medium like watercolor makes the piece stand out and look especially striking.

You’ll find that most live wedding painters use oils or acrylics. Those are lovely, but I admit I have a bit of a bias toward my favorite medium, watercolor. I use watercolor because it’s beautiful, you can work with it quite quickly, and it has a really mesmerizing way of portraying light.
